2013 Review

What an ending to 2013. A few of the boys represented us at some of the Christmas week races and we were out in numbers for the Nos Galan New Year’s Eve race. The most popular race of the year was the Cardiff Half Marathon where we had 30 RVR’s out.

The men’s club championship could not have been any tighter this year with less than a minute in it. The winners are Keith Thompson, Alun Evans and Stephen Poole.

The ladies club championship won by Amy Edwards.

The most races competition won by Tracy Edwards, 16 races and 325 miles.

Best male marathon: Keith Thompson and best female marathon: Tracy Edwards.

Well done to Carl Seaman, Alun Evans, Peter Shanley, Leona Shanley, Karl Burnell and Richard Lawrence also completing marathons in 2013.

The staggered race was almost dominated by the ladies but young Will Davies put an end to that. The winners are Jean Gardner, Will Davies and Tracy Evans.

There was quite a genre of races this year: road, trail, ultras and triathlons – all healthy for the continuous growth of the club. Well done to Tracy Edwards, Carl Seaman for venturing into the world of ultras and to Karl Burnell and Richard Lawrence on their Wales Ironman.

As a team event we improved on our 2012 placing in the Rack Raid. 2014 could be even better.

Perhaps the highlight of the year was seeing so many of our new members running in the Cardiff Half Marathon and completing the distance for the first time. Some of them are going further next year as they have been lucky enough to get London Marathon places.

A BIG thanks to all our new members this year. Some of which have come through the beginners running group led by Tracy and supported by RVR members.

Let’s keep our membership healthy all.

Have a great 2014 everyone.

November Staggered

It was a typical November night for the staggered race – wet and miserable.  But that did not deter those who run.  On the night there were some impressive season bests considering the conditions.

First place went to one of our more recent members Leigh Jones and he also set a new course record.  Second place with a big improved run was Katie Rumble and she proved her effort with a vomiting display (nice one Katie).  Third place with another season best was Richard Lawrence.

The leader board is very compact between 1st and 4th and sets the event up for an exciting December finale.

See the result here.

Endurance Weekend

Well what a BIG weekend for the RVRs.  First up were Tracy and Carl taking on the Brecon Beacons 10 Peaks Challenge: 89Km, 4800m of ascent and 24 hours to complete.  The tough course took in the following climbs:

  1. Fan Fawr, 734 metres
  2. Fan Llia, 632 metres
  3. Fan Brycheiniog, 802 metres
  4. Bannau Sir Gaer, 749 metres
  5. Fan Gyhirych, 725 metres
  6. Fan Nedd, 663 metres
  7. Fan Frynych, 629 metres
  8. Pen y Fan, 886 metres
  9. Cribyn, 795 metres
  10. Fan y Big, 719 metres

Tracy completed the course in 18hrs 49.

Next up were Karl Burnell and Richard Lawrence in the Ironman Wales event.  The event took place in Tenby and it is fast becoming known as one of the toughest Ironman events around.  It included a 3.8K swim, a 180K bike followed by a full marathon with a 17hr cut-off time.  Both made it and earned their Ironman glory.  Karl completed in 12:34:46 and Richard in 15:11:47.

Rhondda Valley Runners, not just a road running club.

Rhondda Fun Run

Sunday July 7th saw the long awaited return of the Rhondda Fun Run and the RVRs showed great support on the day with 18 runners taking part.

It turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far and I think most were grateful for the 9am start but even then runners were traversing looking for shaded areas to run in.

Everyone ran well and the race was a big milestone for some of our runners with it being a first 10 miler.  Well done all.

See our results and some great photos here.

July Staggered

A sizzling staggered race for July and this was noticeable in some of the runners particularly Jean, she was on fire.  Jean won the race and took 4 minutes of her previous time.  Will split the ladies up by taking second and Emma came in third.

These results are keeping the competition wide open.  Martin is still top of the leader board but Jessica and Jean are not far behind.

Let’s hope August can hold onto the sunny weather and take everyone to new personal bests.

Weekend Success

Great weekend for RVRs. Super Saturday started with the girls running in the Race for Life series and then Tracy in the Trail Marathon Wales taking a second in her age category for the Welsh Athletics Long Course event.

This was followed up by Super Sunday and 8 of our members taking part in the inaugural Caerphilly 10K and all out performing themselves.

The best vest award goes to Keith Thompson who came 22nd overall in the first ever Shrewsbury Marathon and took a marvellous first in his age category with a fantastic time of 3:08:40. Now that is going to take some beating from fellow RVRs.

Well done all a good eclectic mix of races.

Mature Performances

Big congratulations on the performance of two of our runners over the weekend.

Alun Evans ran in the Richard Sorbrook Challenge and took 8th place overall and 2nd in his age category.

Keith Thompson ran in the Hereford Half Marathon taking 20th place overall and 1st in his age category.

Well done boys showing off the vest at its best.

Ladies Day

Rhondda Valley Hillbillies rock up at Porthkerry Plod.  What a first race for the new members to cut their teeth on.

A good flat start towards the pebbled beach area then a heart pounding climb through the forestry up onto the caravan park and if they thought this hill was tough wait for the next.

Back down through a quiet lane to the park area before the next climb.  I think there was some bad language echoed around the park on this one – can’t think why.

Everyone finished with smiles on their faces (or perhaps grimaces).

Some snaps from the race here.

May Staggered

A marvellous May staggered held on a beautiful (at last) spring evening.  Twenty one members ran and 2 guests.  It was a first time staggered for runners from the beginners running group and they all put in an incredible effort.  They are:  Jessica, Jean, Emma, Janice, Michelle and Gemma.  Well done girls.

First, second and third places also dominated by the girls with Jessica Reeves taking first, Tracy Evans second and Jean Gardner taking third.

Come on men you need to man up.

See the results here.
